It’s always of mild satisfaction to me when I see a celebrity wearing something twice.
The scales tend to tip in their favor ($$$) when it comes to attaining new things, so you rarely see something twice. (There are obvious exceptions: Britney’s boots during her summer of psychosis; among others.)
The rest of us know the meaning of “wearing into the ground” and other funny quips relating to the tendency to “forget” to cycle out that favorite pair of shorts. I saw J. Simpson on Newlyweds once navigating her way through a garage absolutely stacked with boxes of things sent from designers.
Boxes. Of purses. (One was a $5K python Calvin Klein bag she carried to the gym once.)

But all that aside, sometimes it can be heartbreaking. These things they have are so fabulous, so beautiful, it breaks my heart to think of them sitting in a drawer somewhere. It’s comforting when you see someone wearing something twice, especially something sort of one-of-a-kind. It humanizes them. You realize they must have found this in a store somewhere and really connected with it. And how often does that happen to any of us? It explains their style, and it explains them.

Even though she made a grave mistake in my book [read: Chris Robinson break-up ], I tend to gravitate toward Kate Hudson’s style. And not because of Penny Lane—she deftly masters that and other looks, without looking costumey—but because she is cute. Sorry, that’s the best I’ve got. Let us begin the examination.
Ah, my favorite defunct couple in the golden days, Chris and Flake Hudson. Nice sweater, Kate!
And years later, here she is again, trolling around with Lance Armstrong in the South of France:
…where they went on a fun little boat ride. Hey, I recognize that bracelet:
You wore that once when you were “seen having lunch with Owen Wilson”!
And it comes full-circle, back to the Chris days again:
But the cycle has to start again somewhere; why not with a new dude? Here she was wearing it while watching A-Rod at a Yankees game this summer:
Incidentally, this isn’t even my favorite of her turquoise pieces. I have this photo clipped out, showing her and Chris at a party in Aspen.
She has on this amazing old piece that I am now anxiously awaiting her to recycle. But who knows—maybe it’s not even hers. Maybe she borrowed it from Goldie.
