It’s amazing how the best days can so quickly become the worst days. And how your favorite items of clothing can become balled up rags in the garbage. But 10 years ago, after close to 10 dutiful years of service, the old Marc by Marc Jacobs denim mini skirt I’d adored so much finally bit the dust. A big rip under the back left pocket showed my undies and I had to let her go. I think I’d gotten it on eBay for $21.00.
That skirt had seen me through so much. It was low-slung in a way no clothing was on me in my twenties. It had a subtle A-line that suited my frame, and it was the perfect shade of greyed out blue, with almost no distressing.
On many occasions, I wore that skirt when I wanted to feel my absolute best. No matter how I was feeling or how many sushi rolls I had consumed, it always fit right. And it went with everything.
I can’t claim to ever be a ten, but in that skirt, man, I felt like a perfect nine. I’ve been trying to find a replacement for it ever since.
[A solid attempt: MOTHER denim mini skirt + Rag & Bone cotton sweater + Joie booties.]
I’ve been moving towards mini skirts, period, lately. They harken back to a simpler time—and they make getting dressed much easier.
Below, a few of my current top picks (I got the last one, and it’s like a little slice of Tulum. Not that I’d know.)
Let’s talk sale really quickly so you can hop over to there from here before it all sells out. The Shopbop Sale goes live on November 21st, 2017 7:30am EST to November 26th, 2017 11:59 pm PST. Hide your VISAs, hide your Mastercards, cause here’s the deal:
With code MORE17 you get:
- 20% off orders of $200+
- 25% off orders of $500+
- 30% off orders of $800+
You can probably make that bottom one happen with, like, a pair of Golden Goose sneakers and some underwear.
I think mini skirts became a little too hard for me to work with. They didn’t go with my effortless aesthetic and all the booties I was hoarding. But the reality is, you have to dress for your body type, and mini skirts and shorts work for me. Only, shorts can only work in so many social situations.
I found a solution. Lately, I’m all about pairing my Golden Goose sneakers with mini skirts—it takes away the “trying too hard” of a short skirt, and opens up so many possibilities. The other night, I wore them with my leather Isabel Marant mini skirt and a denim shirt. I’ve worked up to wearing them with slinky dresses but I’m not sure I’m cool enough to pull that off yet.
These are some more minis that are catching my eye—and that cutie pleated skirt and cashmere skirt both came home with me in the sale.
Things are selling out quick, so go git it.
